I am an avid watcher of A24 movies. I loved the title of this, but wasn’t sure what to expect in a movie about hairdressers.
I loved the whole ensemble cast, but Clare Perkins as Cleve was a real revelation for me. Her performance was a powerhouse — the tension and anger brewing and exploding from her, as her hairstyle she had been working on — which she saw as being the potential winner (now robbed from her by the murder, and possibly robbed before by some competition fixing) puts a real engine of anger into the story.
The disintegration of a close knit group into gossip, and their regrouping, really does feel like a convincing evolution of a social group triggered by a traumatic event.
The time zipped by watching this movie. At no point does the energy of this movie flag. Each of the characters plays their part. Harriet Webb as Kendra really stood out as well, a powerful foil for Cleve to bounce off.
I’m going to be searching for more of Kayla Meikle’s work as well. Heider Ali as Gac is powerful too.
All round, for me, it was a bit of a gem.
