I am not super familiar with Televangelism. I had heard of Tammy Faye, but I think it was more in the role as connected to the LGBTQIA+ community.
So, what drew me to this? Jessica Chastain. She is one of those actresses who is gold in everything she is in, even if the thing she is in isn\’t that great — which I vaguely remember having seen something that fits that description, though I am at a loss to name it.
Also, Andrew Garfield is in it, which is a pretty sure bet too.
The story is very compelling. I take the veracity of it with some pinches of salt. Not being affected by the betrayal that Christians surely felt from the Bakkers, I can\’t say I had any kind of opinion of the characters. Jerry Falwell was not someone I had much liking for, and still don\’t. Tammy though, I felt sympathy with after this movie. I\’m not sure I am ever going to dig in and find out more about these guys, but watching Chastain disappear into the role is amazing. The make-up in this movie is amazing. The storytelling feels sincere and doesn\’t treat the subjects disrespectfully. I think watching this movie is worth the investment.
