Luther: Never Too Much (2024) Direct by Dawn Porter

I knew about the Luther Vandross Bowie connection, but I found out more about it here. As with each aspect of this story, I learned more about how much of a genius Luther was.

I liked that it mostly focused on the music. When it almost strayed into prurient territory the spirit of Luther, and the respect others had for him, meant they minded their own effin’ business.

And the music. I hadn’t really heard Dance With My Father, and it really hit me in the feels.

No one who worked with him could fail to see his talent, and they wanted him to succeed, and they were happy for him to start doing what they knew he could do. Bowie knew he was something special, so did Roberta Flack, so did Bette Midler. His abilities and his voice made him stand out. He was destined to rise to the level he rose to, that he did so, leaving such a generally good impression on people is a real testament to him.

I enjoyed this documentary, and it really deepened my appreciation of a great artist.
