I thought this was a funny idea — an interesting gimmick.
I did not expect to become invested in it, and at one point where one of the actors lays bare how much the project means to him, to feel a real emotional impact.
To pull this off in an environment uniquely antithetical to the endeavour makes it even more of a feat. I haven’t read my Shakespeare in a while, but this really engaged that part of me.
We have had some wonderful versions of Shakespeare, from Baz Luhrmann to Kenneth Branagh and beyond, and this deserves a place amongst their ranks — it is memorable, and it is heartfelt, and I really liked some of the readings. Oh, and it’s fun — did I mention that?
