Snow White (2025) Directed by Marc Webb

I did not go into this expecting much. I haven’t really liked any of the so-called live action movies at all. This one got more than it’s fair share of hatred — based around “casting choices”, meaning the choice of someone not white.

Rachel Zegler is not unlikeable as Snow White. This isn’t the Snow White of the classic animation though. It has a lot of added extras in the story that totally reframe it, and give it a different meaning. Honestly, that may be one of the things that made it more interesting for me.

Gal Gadot needs to speak to her agent. After the Wonder Woman Sequel and this, and some of the other things I have seen her in, her star is not really in the ascendant at the moment. The queen in the original, and I know this is going to sound funny given it was literally an animation, was less cartoonish. Villains told with such unsubtle broad strokes, who supposedly seduced people with their guile and cunning, aren’t convincing. You empathise with Joker, you can feel for Elijah in Unbreakable. This Queen just feels flat.

The music wasn’t bad. The dwarves were tolerable. Quigg was an OK running joke. It is not the least watchable thing I have seen in the last year. It just suffers the same burden as all of its live action brethren — that feeling of why the hell did they bother.
