There were a couple of obvious moments which reminded me of Tarkovsky, but the Russian director came to mind as a touchstone for the whole sensibility of the movie. I\’ll be interested to see if I read this anywhere in reference to David Lowery\’s inspiration.
I haven\’t honestly seen Dev Patel in much since Slumdog Millionaire, where he has stood out to me, but based on the strength of his performance here as Gawain, I intend to hunt out what I can.
It\’s interesting to watch something that takes its time to unpack a story. It looks very dark in terms of lighting and the speech and music add to this. A sombre movie that manages to keep the tone claustrophobic while still giving the impression of movement. But that movement seems almost an expenditure of Gawain\’s mental energy as his mind moves forward through his life, while he remains trapped in the moment of both his removal of the Green Knight\’s head and his failure to keep his bargain. It is kin to The Last Temptation of Christ.
Definitely a worthwhile watch.
