Rebellious Jukebox: Motherlovebone

I think I discovered Motherlovebone just after Andrew Wood had died. I came across them at the same time as I started getting into Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney. It was the nineties anyway, I know that much. I\’m not trying to claim any prescience in regards to the grunge sound, just trying to establish a scene. As well as discovering Apple which had some really great songs it — my favourites being Captain Hi-Top and Stardog Champion; there was also Temple Of The Dog:an album that Chris Cornell had put together for his departed friend, and that is an almost totally flawless collection of music.

The thing is, most of the interest in Motherlovebone seems to stem from the fact that Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam were members and not from the talents of the front man who, most people looking back agree on this, would have been big if he had never died. He has quite a range in his voice, has that weirdness to the lyrics and that poetic edge that keeps them interesting. What would the world be like if Pearl Jam had never been and Motherlovebone has reigned alongside Nirvana? The movement might have had a less serious heart. Who knows? What ifs and maybes are no use to anyone — what we have is Apple and the extended version which they called Purple with all those songs on them — what we have is a record of one of those bands killed in its infancy that might have had the potential to change everything, but who regardless of that fact gave some great music.
