Interesting film. Comes sideways at the storyline, dresses itself in a lot of metaphors and allusions and does, in some small way manage to evoke an emotional response.
It reminded me a little of a Peter Greenaway film – a slow burn absurdism that lets the message seep into your awareness. It isn’t a long film, but the pacing of the narrative creates a lot of space that makes it seem a lot longer.
I can see how it makes people think of Beckett. It is drawn in economic lines that sketches out the larger picture and whereas something longer can seem lacking, this kind of film works like a painting that moves and changes its players every so often.
A satire, a dark comedy, and sure, a soap opera. If you like something that moves fast, has great dialogue, and is really entertaining, I don’t think this is the film you are looking for. If you want something that edges into your consciousness and leaves you with the vague impression you just experienced something, even if you aren’t quite sure what it is – then this one will fit you right.
