The first version of this painting that I saw was actually the Giger one — it has been in my life for a long time: ever since I bought the Giger Taschen poster book after becoming interested in him through his work on Alien. From reading the poster books descriptions of the poster I learned that the painting was a tribute to the work of Boecklin and I had to hunt it down — I have to admit that I was surprised at how closely the two pictures resembled each other but also it struck me how very different they were.
Both paintings draw you in, and both are very atmospheric but I get a different feeling from both of them. Proof that someone can create something which references another piece of work, even as closely as this, and do something new with it.
