Introduction

There exists a world of horrors beneath the one we know. Where the creatures of our nightmares stalk amongst humanity and play their games of vengeance, murder and intrigue. To police this world there is The Chain; a covert agency of monsters and killers, charged with keeping the human herd from ever growing too thin.

Now a new threat to The Chain’s status quo has risen. The creature known as Harp’s Bane has gone rogue, taking with him the Conundrunomicon – the most secret and powerful codebook in existence. In response to this transgression four of The Chain’s best agents – Gravehouse, Creeping Tuesday, Charlotte Hatred and Cowboy 13 – are tasked to retrieve the book and put a halt to Harp’s schemes.

The stage is set for a terrifying chase across a hidden America as old grudges and older secrets come bubbling to the surface. Ancient terrors ride in black helicopters, psychotic cowboys walk the land and dead girls with killer smiles hide in the shadows. In this world of horrors there are no heroes and no villains; only monsters. Some more necessary than others.

Necessary Monsters is written by Daniel Merlin Goodbrey and illustrated by Sean Azzopardi. The series updates twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I came across this on a thread on Warren Ellis\’s forum for this brand new web comic yesterday. From what I have read of the strip itself and the character biographies I am already intrigued. I mean look at that description above — if that doesn\’t get you salivating then there has to be something wrong with you. If that truly isn\’t enough then you can click through the link at the end of this and go take a look. The black and white art is great, really striking. I think it may bring some Tarantino comparisons to mind which are fair enough I suppose – everyone gets that at some point – but for me it called to mind Things To In Denver When You\’re Dead.

Like any piece of art though it has to shed the shackles of its influences and become its own beast and this does that from the off. It is its own beast. I suppose that you could say the test of how good these strips are is how much they make you want to own the book and looking at this that desire is already there. The amount of talent that frequents Whitechapel is a constant source of pleasure. This story looks like it has legs and I hope that it is a big success.
