I wanted to like it.
I wanted it not to be an empty bit of shininess like Ghost In The Shell.
It looks good. Mostly. But that really does seems to be it.
I\’m going to add a disclaimer — I am one episode in. So maybe it gets better. It is just that was painful.
The anime felt louche, the characters laid back and capable, but not trying hard because they were confident and knew they could do anything they needed to do.
Netflix have not made that show on the evidence I have seen thus far. The characters feel like cosplay, and what we see is a karaoke version of the story. If you are going to adapt something you need to make a better case for why we need a different version, and I don\’t see that. The fight scenes figuratively fail to land a punch in the same way the humour fails to stick a punchline.
Foundation and other adaptations, like The Boys (which isn\’t an exact lift from the comics), have led me to have high expectations. Maybe a couple more episodes will change my viewpoint, but I found the show boring, with the source material it\’s working from that\’s hard to do, especially when the anime hit the ground running and made you care about the characters instantly.
