This Town Ain\’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us — that is pretty much all Sparks meant to me before this dictionary; that and Ron Mael\’s moustache. I had been teeing it up to buy a lot of their albums, but I wasn\’t familiar with much of their output.
I don\’t think I had ever seen Ron smile. I had no idea how erudite Ron and Russell were. Every iteration of Sparks has something new to love about it. When you hear the songs it is hard to see how they didn\’t become so much bigger than they are, but then part of you wonders if they would be the band they are with outrageous continued success. But how could a band like this be contained within any kind of formula.
When you see all the people who were influenced by them, and all the ex-bandmates who still love them, you just want good things for Sparks. Sparks are good things — they have 25 albums, not a one of them the same. I challenge you to watch this documentary and not want to buy the whole back catalogue. It really does seem like Sparks are in back of a lot of the great movements in music since they came into being, or should that be out ahead of the curve? Does it matter? They are edgy and catchy and funny, but serious music, all at the same time. Check out the documentary — if you love music you\’ll love this.
