Businessmen are kind of interesting,, but there\’s interesting and there\’s interesting.
Guy\’s like Steve Jobs and David Geffen, who don\’t just want to make money but also have a real interest in popular culture, and because of that passion do things that change the face of popular culture, are something to behold.
He comes across as very personable, but time and again you hear about the caged lion which can be let out, and is let out, and how you want him in your corner, not fighting against you. There is something in that to respect.
A lot of the cultural objects which I prize and value have been made possible in some way by this man, and I will be honest – I was interested to find something out about him, but did not expect this whole documentary to be as interesting and engaging as it was.
One thing that saved it for me was that they actually had the subject himself talking, so it side-stepped that awful talking heads borefest feel that some documentaries fall into the pitfall of becoming (yes, I know that is an access and budget issue mostly, but even so). Watch it – you won\’t regret it.
