Rebellious Jukebox: The Fall

\"mark

You can\’t really have a section called Rebellious Jukebox without having the person who coined the phrase present and correct. The Fall are a phenomenon: The Fall are Mark E Smith — one of the most original lyricists and vocalists going. I don\’t think it would be wrong to compare the impact that they have had to someone like The Velvet Underground. Of course a lot of their influence would not have been possible without the help of a certain Mr Peel who championed them and countless others of course and got them air play where they might not have got it otherwise. I think at the last count it was 23 studio albums and I know  it almost triples if you add in the live albums. There have been several phases of the group, one of the most productive being when Brix was with them but you can see by their output that they are anything but lazy. A Fall album can be nostalgic, intellectual, aggressive, scathing, satirical, futuristic — in fact there are not many areas that a good Fall album won\’t touch on. Mark E Smith is definitely a renaissance man — fiercely intelligent and seemingly interested in everything. He oftn comes across as antagonistic in interviews but I have read interviews where he is just as pleasant — I think the thing is that he is passionate — you can\’t keep that long without it; you can\’t survive the disintegration of your band on an almost regular schedule without it. From Live At The Witch Trials through to Fall Heads Will Roll there is a healthily pumping heart keeping the band kicking. They say of James Joyce\’s Ulysses that if you needed to reconstruct Dublin you could use it as source material — the same could be said of a particular kind of England and the songs of The Fall. Raise a glass to the hip priest … he is not appreciated!
