Film Hick: King Richard (2021)

King Richard

I have always enjoyed watching Venus and Serena play tennis. I had seen their father at a number of their matches, but I never really spent much time worrying about him at all — I just took it as being a dedicated father attending his daughter’s matches. I maybe gleaned a little more of the influence he had wielded after watching some interviews with Serena.

The day before this I watched Will Smith being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and I gained some insight into how Smith had approached this role, and that gave me further insight into Richard Williams.

Will Smith is great in this movie. The actress who plays Venus is amazing. You have to appreciate the vision and the drive — the willingness to push against setbacks and people that don’t believe in you or the future you see ahead of you.

It’s not easy, but you get the see the heart of Venus and Serena, their father, and their whole family. The story would be inspirational even without the great acting in the movie, but it is nice that this story got the treatment it deserved.
